Barriers to Communication

A Barrier prevents the message being heard, and being understood.

What is a Barrier?

Problems with Technology -

When communicating with someone there is a lot of barriers in Technology for example, if you are emailing your colleague or friend and you lose internet connection because of a lead coming loose this is a barrier and will prevent you from sending that email through. Another barrier would be if you are trying to Skype a friend and they don’t know how to use the Computer they are trying to Skype you with.

Firewalls -

Firewalls can prevent you from accessing different programs and not being able to communicate with someone for example Skype. if your firewall is denying Skype for some reason you wont be able to access it unless it is disabled in the firewall settings. Firewalls are to prevent different programs that may have viruses in them to start up on your computer.

Viruses -

Viruses play a big part in barriers to communicating as some viruses might make your program or computer crash resulting in you not being able to communicate with anyone on that certain program. Viruses can seriously damage your computer and make it slower, and also more vulnerable to receiving further viruses.

Inexperienced Users -

If there is someone who is not familiar with the technology it’s going to be hard to be able to communicate with them properly because they wouldn’t know how to use it. There are also firewalls that will protect you from using different programs, apps, and internet sites so if for example you are trying to connect to Skype you would probably need to go into your firewall settings and allow Skype, some users might find this difficult to do.

  Barrier Language Used -

Use of Slang -

if someone is using slang language for example saying " u " instead of " you " some people might not understand this preferably older people as they are the ones behind in technology compared to younger ones certainly at a majority level.

Use of Technical Terms -

If someone is using technical terms to someone who is not familiar with these words they might not understand what you are saying and get bored. This can happen to a lot of people and it does preferably young children when you are trying to teach them something you have to make everything so simple so they can understand it well.

Interpersonal Communication Barriers -

Body Language Barriers -

Checking the time -

Checking the time shows that you are anxious to get home from work because you want to relax, or even that you’re bored and have nothing else to do. Checking the time also shows you are not determined to get your work done, lack of interest in what you’re doing.

Pointing your finger -

Pointing your finger shows that you are angry or disappointed it can even be classed as cheeky. If someone is pointing there finger it is not a good sign and you could even start a fight in really bad circumstances. also pointing the finger is really pinpointing the person who is not doing enough work, or else has done something wrong and you are trying to show someone him/her in a crowd for example.

Written Communication Barriers -

Document contains Spelling and Grammar errors -

If a document contains Spelling and Grammar errors then the document will look tacky to others if they try to read it. It will also have a lot of red lines underneath words which will make it hard to read and understand. if you are trying to communicate with someone and they see bad spelling mistakes in an email for example they are gonna either stop reading it or pay less attention to it and think you either rushed the email or else you just cant spell correctly.
